SOMEDAYS IT JUST DOESN'T PAY TO GET UP !!!

I would really hate to be the one to try and rescue him. I am pretty sure this qualifies as one of the things that really pisses a badger off..
By the way, it is not DEAD

FUND-RAISING

The committee tasked with exploring new ideas for fund raising, or twists on old ideas, met Feb.3, and began to formulate some basic premises . . .

FIRST
In the past, fund raising has often started with an idea for an activity, and then the $$s raised were allocated to some aspect of the Ag Society's responsibilities. We felt that this was a backwards way to approach things even though we've come up with some super events . .

The FR Committee's report will suggest that we approach the idea of fund raising from a needs basis; that is . . what do we need, and then the funds raised should be targeted to that specific capital expense, or Fair-related activity. These specifics should then have a $$ goal associated with them. Then fund raising activities commence to raise money for the specific, much the way that the first rock and Roll Car Shows earmarked the $$' for the heating system.

SECOND
The role of the FR committee will be to assess ideas as they are presented and make recommendations to the Board as to whether we endorse a proposal. Recommendations will be based on a number of criteria, such as . .
  1. volunteers needed compared to volunteers committed
  2. start-up funds required
  3. duration of the prep time
  4. timing ( an awareness of other activities in the area that may conflict )
  5. venue and physical considerations
  6. potential return
  7. and other considerations

THIRD
The FR Committee is NOT the event committee for the fund raising activities. It will be presented to the Board that All fund raising proposals will need to go through the FR Committee, and issues above will need to be addressed.
In addition, the proposal should include a draft volunteer list. These volunteers do not all have to be currently involved with the fair, and in fact, it would be desirable to get other community members to be part of a specific, focused group. This is one of the ways to broaden the volunteer base of the GNE.

FOURTH
We all agreed that there is little need to reinvent the wheel, and that there are tons of successful fundraisers in Canada right now. we just have to do the research to find them, talk to and learn from the people who have tried them.

SUMMARY
All current committees will be invited to submit Fundraising proposals that specify a goal ( eg: new timer for the mud bog, more quilt racks, stage lights etc ) and also have an idea for a way to earn the funds.

In this way, we may find a path to the extra money we need, for the things that will keep our Fair as one of the best in Canada !

This is the gist of our first committee meeting and a formal report will be presented to the Board at the February board meeting.

Right out of the Gate !

In this day and age, we are becoming used to fast . . fast cars, fast food, fast choices, fast communication, etc. The Great Northern Exhibition is an event that lets folks enjoy a more relaxed pace of entertainment, activity, and information.

Started over 150 years ago by the mixing of rural and town populations as a means, like so many 'county fairs', of sharing ideas, technologies and just good old bragging rights for the best cow, or pickles, the Great Northern Exhibition has kept up with, or perhaps, stayed slightly behind the times when it comes to its selection of activities and exhibits.

That's not to say that individuals in the rural community don't stay on the leading edge of technology . . the tractor driver has a cell phone in his or her pocket, checks the weather forecasts on the internet, and the commodity prices with his or her blackberry . . .

With that in mind, the GNE has had a website for a decade, and today starts a new chapter in interactive communication.

It is our intention to have this ongoing Blog for the use of those volunteers who make the GNE the great Fair that it's become. . . .

What can be posted here??

  • Notices of meetings or events . .
  • Minutes of those meetings . . ( we are a public group, and minutes are available to the public)
  • Ideas to improve the GNE . .
  • Questions about how things go . . .
  • Schedules of upcoming activities . .
  • Comments on news of current interest in the social or rural fields . . ( no pun intended )

We hope this will help connections between all our contributors, volunteers, sponsors and fair guests . .

So, for now, you can add a comment, or if you have a post of your own, forward it to me at

the Back 40 Blogger

and I'll get it up for you . . .

Hay, did you hear the story about the farmer . . he was outstanding in his field !!!
